Keep High Speed Rail Funded

High Speed Rail in California is just over a year from becoming reality, but the next few months will be crucial. Despite voicing many good intentions over combating global warming and improving the environment, Governor Schwarzenegger has budgeted just one-percent (!) of the amount that the high speed rail authority needs to keep high speed rail on track. Last year, the Governor and Legislature provided full funding to allow the high speed rail authority to bring on consultants to begin detailed engineering and environmental work for most of the state's system. Now, with the work under contract, the Governor is offering a budget that won't pay any of their bills, which will probably result in all the consultants leaving the project. Who would work for free?

While the state's budget is always tight, killing the budget for the project a year before the project goes before the voters is an insult to the last decade's work of both the authority and many dedicated advocates, including TRAC. Write to the Governor and the Chairs of the state's budget committees to let them know that over a decade of work shouldn't be thrown away. Thank them for the added appropriations they've made for the project so far. Tell them we need alternatives to highways and airports. Let them know YOU support high speed rail. You might also remind the Governor that we want high speed rail to remain on the ballot in 2008. It's our decision, not his.
